Fabry Presenting at 2026 Math in Action
Ashley Fabry, mathematics education doctoral student at Michigan State University, will be presenting at the 2026 Math in Action conference on Saturday, February 28th at Grand Valley State University, in Mackinac Hall's D wing.
The Math in Action conference will offer discussions of current issues concerning
mathematics education, and also provide opportunities for practicing PreK-12 teachers,
prospective teachers, curriculum directors, and college and university faculty to
share ideas, concerns, and resources.
Participants can attend these conferences in person or remotely. Presentations labeled “hybrid” have an in-person speaker, and online participants can view these presentations via Zoom. Presentations labeled "in-person" have an in-person speaker and are only available to in-person participants.
The conference will consist of six hour-long sessions related to mathematics, with each session having multiple interactive presentations across all grade bands from which participants can choose.
Ashley commented, "I'm excited to engage in tasks with local teachers that shift our mindset for contextualized
mathematics. I originally designed and selected these activities for my work with
pre-service teachers, and I'm excited to hear what in-service teachers think about
how we can design more relevant mathematics for students."

Using Mathematics to Learn About the World
We will engage in quantitative literacy inspired tasks that use mathematics in authentic ways to learn about the world. We will discuss advantages, challenges, task design, and how we can use similar tasks to increase relevance for our students.
